Big tech company Amazon runs a training programme specifically for military veterans and ex forces to encourage more service leavers into careers in tech. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the part of Amazon that provides cloud computing platforms to companies such as Netflix, Pinterest and Reddit. It’s the biggest cloud web service in the world, with revenues of $3.54 billion in operating income in 2019.
It’s estimated there are over 600,000 tech jobs vacant in the UK, costing the economy around £63 million every year. “We don’t have enough trained, skilled people to help us through the journey from where we are right now, and manage that environment going forward”, says AWS UK and Ireland Managing Director Darren Mowry describing the raison d’etre behind the scheme.
The free UK re/Start programme runs in cohorts across the UK in Yeovil, Glasgow, Dundee, Reading, Southampton, Edinburgh, Plymouth, Aberdeen, Portsmouth and Newcastle.
The 12-week program features real-world scenario-based learning, hands-on labs, and coursework is supported by professional mentors and accredited trainers. The program also provides structured interventions that help learners with resume and interview coaching to prepare for employer meetings and interviews to launch an entry-level cloud career.

To be eligible for program, you need to fulfil these requirements:
You are not in full time employment or are working regularly more than 16 hours per week
👉 You are currently not in education or training
👉 You have the legal right to live and work in the UK
👉 You are interested in a career in technology and are able to demonstrate the same
👉 You are available and ok to undergo training for 12 consecutive weeks (Full days; Monday to Friday 9 AM to 5:30 PM)
👉 You possess computing equipment and steady internet connection to undergo the training
👉 You are ok to start working immediately post training should you find a job opportunity
👉 You are ex military
